Short for also called stake size. What’s staked on one spin or hand, worked out as a fraction of a bankroll instead of an isolated number.

Fixed by: Set by the player, ideally weighed against bankroll size and the chosen game’s volatility. Where you meet it: A game’s betting panel carries its stake selectors.

The misreading: Safety by default is often assumed just because a bet unit looks small.

Free spins explained

A round of free spins triggered as a feature, no added stake required.

Fixed by: A game feature gets set by the game studio, whereas a promotion gets set by the operator. Where you meet it: You’ll spot it in game feature lists, then again on its own within bonus terms.

The misreading: An in-game free-spin round is not the same as free spins given out by an operator as a promotion, even though the name matches.

Hit frequency, in detail

The misreading: A game’s high hit frequency is frequently assumed to indicate it pays more, or that it’s ‘looser’.

Maximum cashout, in detail

Short for also called a win cap. How much can be withdrawn from bonus-generated winnings is capped, irrespective of the balance actually reached.

Fixed by: The operator, whose bonus terms set it. Where you meet it: Proximity to the wagering requirement clause, typically within bonus terms and conditions.

The misreading: The usual expectation is that the full resulting balance becomes withdrawable the moment wagering is cleared.

The RTP entry

Short for return to player. A game’s long-run return to players, out of all money wagered, expressed as a percentage.

Fixed by: The game studio, deciding this as the game gets built. Where you meet it: The spec tables on game pages, and studio info panels.

The misreading: That a 96% RTP means getting 96% of your money back in an evening is a common misreading.

Wagering requirement, in detail

Short for also called playthrough or turnover. It’s the multiple a bonus must be wagered through before withdrawing any part of it.

Fixed by: Set within the operator’s bonus terms, not the studio’s. Where you meet it: The terms and conditions attached to a bonus.

The misreading: ‘Deposit this much’ is the common, if wrong, reading of wagering.

Not one of these definitions rests on our say-so. Take any of it back to the game itself and check:

1. Open any slot’s own information screen. You will find the paytable, the way-count and the feature rules inside, and every mechanical definition here traces back to them.
2. Compare a way-count against the grid. 1,024 ways on a 5x4 grid is simply 4 to the power of 5; it measures the layout, not the payout.
3. Bonus terms are worth reading at source - the operator’s conditions, not a digest of them. Multiplied against what, though - bonus alone or bonus and deposit together - because that choice doubles the figure a wagering requirement produces.
4. Where the studio publishes no RTP, test the two sources quoting one against each other. On JILI games they can sit two points apart, and that settles how much weight either deserves.

The thing most often got wrong here

If there is one error that recurs through all of these terms, it is the assumption that the operator sets them. For the majority it has no say - RTP, volatility, paylines, wilds and scatters are fixed by the studio during development, beyond the reach of any site that lists the title.

The wagering requirement is the outlier, written by the operator into the bonus terms it publishes. Each one is labelled accordingly, since the label tells you who to complain to, and complaints delivered to the wrong party get nowhere.
